Sprouting Benefits

What is Sprouting and why is it good for me?
Sprouting is the key to enhanced nutrition. We all know that seeds, grains and beans play an important role in a healthy diet, but their nutrients can be increased multifold through the process of germination. Germination releases enzymes specifically designed to start the seed on its way to becoming a plant, which in turn consolidates nutrients. Sprouted foods are high in fiber, helps neutralize and remove waste from the body, and some (like our Broccoli and Diakon Radish Seeds) even contain anticancer substances. Click here to learn more about the power of sprouting.

What is the difference between seed sprouting and green sprouting?
Seed sprouting and Green sprouting are very different. Seed sprouting, is the process of germinating the seed and then halting it’s growth just after the tail (sprout) begins to grow. This locks in vital nutrients which were created as enzymes were activated. The seed is than dehydrated and can be used the same ways as other non-germinated seeds, grains and beans. Click here to learn more about germination. Green sprouting (think alfalfa sprouts) is the shoot, which is allowed to grow into a plant after germination and is considered a perishable produce item.

Are sprouted products safe to eat?
Yes, after our grains, seeds and beans are germinated (sprouted), we than carefully dry them to remove all but the smallest amount of moisture. High moisture levels, coupled with poor seed quality are what sometimes allow bacteria to grow in green sprouts. The moisture which remains in a Way Better Snack germinated seed is so low that microbial proliferation is not possible. We also use only the highest quality Organic seeds, grains and beans in our products.

Do Sprouted grains and seeds taste as good as regular seeds and grains?
Yes. Germination does not change taste. In fact, we are sure you will find them even more delicious knowing how much more nutritious they are for you to eat.

What does the Sprouted Seal on your package mean?
It means that we only use the highest quality sprouted ingredients (and not a “token” amount either). Our Sprouted Seal is your guarantee that you’re eating a really high quality sprouted product. Click here to learn more about our sprouting standards.

Why are sprouted Broccoli and Radish seeds so good for you?
While mature broccoli contains a range of valuable nutritional compounds, germinated Broccoli seeds contain up to 50 times more of these substances. Both sprouted Broccoli and Radish seed contain Sulphoraphane (SGS). Scientists have found that sprouted Broccoli seeds consistently contain up to 50 times the amount of SGS found in mature Broccoli heads and may offer a simple dietary means of reducing the risk of diseases such as cancer. Our Way Better Snacks items have around 3000 mcg’s of SGS, which means they have much of the same nutrition as fresh mature Broccoli.

Does the baking process of making chips harm sprouted nutrients?
Many vitamins and minerals are not heat sensitive. So many of the benefits brought about by the activation of enzymes such as the elimination of enzyme inhibitors, increased vitamin, increased antioxidant levels and their bioavailability remains after cooking. An easy way to think about this is that the nutritional value of a sprouted food has an exponentially higher nutritional portfolio than its dried or cooked counterpart, processing a sprouted food will still yield superior nutrition than the unsprouted alternative.

About Our Ingredients

What kind of ingredients do you use?
In keeping with our promise to remember to always be better, our recipes limit our ingredients to only those necessary to produce a great tasting and nutritious product. No fillers. No preservatives. All of our ingredients are all-natural, non-GMO (not genetically modified) and the highest quality ingredients available. And they can all be easily pronounced!

Where do you get your ingredients from?
We are proud of our simple ingredients which are all sourced in the Americas. Our germination (sprouting) is done using state of the art practices and backed by our sprouting quality seal. Click here to learn more about our sprouting standards.

Do you source any ingredients from Asia?
Unlike many of our competitors, we do not source any ingredients from Asia due to concerns of unreliable labeling practices with natural and organic items coming from this part of the world. In 2010, it was estimated by the Organic Consumers Association that only about 30% of Chinese products labeled organic, are actually organic.

Is all organic food non-GMO?
To clarify, GMO avoidance is a central tenet of organic.  Unfortunately, because of the increased proliferation of GMOs over the last 15 years, there is a growing contamination risk to all non-GMO crops, including organic. Organic products still have a much lower risk of contamination than conventional products, and the organic industry is working hard to keep organic non-GMO. What the Non-GMO Project does that the National Organic Program does not do is require testing and set action thresholds. These tools make it possible to exercise basic control over contamination, and give consumers reassurance that the most rigorous GMO avoidance practices possible have been followed for both organic and conventional products.

Can non-organic corn be non-GMO?
Yes. Corn can be conventionally grown (non GMO), organically grown (non GMO), and conventionally grown (GMO). At this time approximately  88% of the U.S. Corn crop (as of 2011)  is planted with GMO seed.  While only conventional farmers can intentionally plant GMO corn, with the proliferation of GMO corn both conventional and to a lesser degree organic are at risk of GMO contamination. We go to great lengths to ensure that our corn is non-GMO. Not only do we purchase non-GMO corn, our products are verified by the Non-GMO Project—the only third party verifier of non-GMO food and products in North America. For our products to carry the Non-GMO Project Verification mark they must be in full compliance with the Non-GMO Project’s standard. This means:

  • There is ongoing testing of all at-risk ingredients—any ingredient being grown commercially in GMO form (like corn) is tested prior to use in a verified product. This PCR test is conducted to make sure that the ingredient is non-GMO.
  • We have rigorous traceability and segregation practices in place in order to ensure ingredient integrity through to the finished product. To learn more visit: http://www.nongmoproject.org/learn-more/understanding-our-seal/
  • Verification is maintained through an annual audit, along with onsite inspections for high-risk products
